The Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project "New Beginnings: Initiative for Overcoming Addictions" (Project No: 2024-1-PL01-KA152-YOU-000220301) was implemented in Lublin, Poland, from 9–16 December 2024 under the coordination of Stowarzyszenia Polish Healthy Life Association. Bringing together young participants from Austria, Italy, Poland, Türkiye, the project created an inspiring international learning environment dedicated to preventing addictions, with a particular focus on gambling and online betting. Through non-formal education, intercultural cooperation, and experiential learning, participants developed practical competences while raising awareness of one of the most significant social challenges affecting young people today.
The project combined interactive learning methods with collaborative activities to help participants better understand the causes, consequences, and prevention of gambling addiction. Team-building exercises, simulation activities, and creative workshops encouraged young people to explore how addictive behaviours influence individuals, families, and communities. By working together in multicultural groups, participants strengthened their communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills while experiencing the value of solidarity and peer support in overcoming social challenges. The collaborative nature of the programme demonstrated that sustainable solutions to addiction require both personal responsibility and community engagement.
One of the project's most engaging learning experiences focused on encouraging participants to critically examine everyday behaviours that may normalize gambling. Through discussions and interactive activities exploring games commonly associated with childhood, participants reflected on how certain forms of entertainment can gradually shape attitudes toward gambling. Comparing cultural perspectives and analysing real-life examples helped participants identify potential risk factors and better understand the psychological mechanisms that contribute to addictive behaviours. These activities strengthened critical thinking skills while encouraging participants to make more informed and responsible decisions in their own lives.
Media literacy and digital storytelling formed another important pillar of the project. Participants received practical training in filming, video editing, sound production, and documentary creation before applying their new knowledge in international teams. By interviewing individuals affected by gambling addiction, family members, and mental health professionals, they gained valuable insight into the emotional, social, and economic consequences of addiction. Transforming these interviews into documentary content enabled participants to combine technical skills with empathy and responsible communication, producing educational materials capable of inspiring awareness far beyond the duration of the project itself.
Community engagement played a central role throughout the exchange. Participants conducted surveys, interviews, and public awareness activities with local residents, encouraging open conversations about gambling addiction and healthy lifestyle choices. These outreach initiatives improved participants' research, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills while demonstrating how youth-led awareness campaigns can positively influence local communities. At the same time, cultural exchange evenings, collaborative presentations, and dissemination activities celebrated Europe's cultural diversity, strengthened intercultural dialogue, and created lasting friendships among participants from different countries.
The final stage of the project focused on evaluating learning outcomes and encouraging personal reflection. Through Youthpass activities, self-assessment exercises, project evaluations, and the Six Thinking Hats methodology, participants analysed their individual progress and recognised the knowledge, skills, and competences they had developed throughout the exchange. Reflection sessions highlighted not only improvements in communication, creativity, teamwork, and leadership but also increased confidence, empathy, and social responsibility. These activities reinforced the importance of lifelong learning and empowered participants to transfer their newly acquired competences into future educational, professional, and community initiatives.
By combining non-formal education, creativity, international cooperation, and active participation, New Beginnings: Initiative for Overcoming Addictions successfully equipped young people with the knowledge and tools needed to address gambling addiction from multiple perspectives. Beyond increasing awareness, the project inspired participants to become active advocates for healthier lifestyles, responsible decision-making, and inclusive communities. The partnerships established, experiences shared, and educational resources created throughout the exchange will continue to contribute to future youth work initiatives, ensuring that the project's impact extends well beyond its implementation period.
